Artwork Statement

“Inspiration for the ‘Blemish’ series began with the art of the Victorians. On the one hand they created the enduring stereotypes of fey beauty with the Preraphaelites. while on the other hand, they were obsessively documenting all the physical abnormalities and distortions that nature can provide.

Doing things to the canvas seemed a logical next step. The painting subverts stereotypes so why not disrupt the actual physical support for these images? It allowed me to reference modernism and layers of grids over pre-modernist styles of painting. The work is about integration and synthesis, with oodles of fetishism as well”. JAMES GUPPY
