Artwork Statement

Geoff Levitus wrote about his work in 1989: "My work has for a long time pursued themes of isolation, social dislocation, and the human need to define identity in relationships with other people and immediate environment. The most recent series of work has taken the figure, often floating or unattached away from the domestic interior and into the landscape. The paintings have a very personal and intense emotive feel to them, heightened by the use of colour and expressive impasto, and the landscape is that of Rosebank and Repentance Creek, where I live. Despite this there is no narrative other than that discovered by the viewer, as it is a set of emotions related to a theme that is important. These works speak of the human condition and focus on the figure in the regional landscape as opposed to the more obviously alienating city”.

Geoff Levitus now lives in Sydney.
