Artwork Statement

'The Orpheus print was an attempt to meld my childhood hero, the comic character Mr. Walker alias The Phantom (The Ghost Who Walks) with the classical archetype Orpheus. My favourite film then was Cocteau's Orphee. I have always been fascinated with the comic as an art form, and its extension into cinema. I made over a dozen films in the 60s and 70s. I made a film about The Phantom as well in 1974 (see National Film Archive Canberra). At the moment I'm working on a series of paintings with a narrative element around the novelist D. H. Lawrence and the writing of Kangaroo'. The artist, 1994
