In 1959 the Seventh Lismore Art Exhibition was made open to entry "by invitation only“ through Moreton Galleries, Brisbane.

Dora Toovey was a well-regarded portrait and landscape artist and made several painting excursions into Central Australia. This painting Cox’s River Sketch was the original sketch for a larger work.

Toovey won a number art awards including the prestigious Portia Geach Memorial Award, in 1970 and 1978. The prizewinning painting in 1970 was a self-portrait, which is part of the collection of the Art Gallery of NSW.
