Artwork Statement

In WIK MIK Eric Leroux and I are re-interpreting an image by Michael Baartz referring to the exploitation of Aboriginal people by white settlers. The mirrors, beads and blankets are transformed into dollars signs, magic carpets and eyes, which together with the inverted shadow image look toward 'the other'. This shadow image recurs in other works in which I have been involved. Leroux's white head is partnered by my black head, the white arrows symbolising interaction and exchange. Two figures (top left, repeated in Navigating the Currents) reach out to one another, different yet the same, across a broken divide.

This three-way collaboration reflects for me the magic moment when, reaching toward the other, beyond the waiting, the sense of separation, the anticipation, the vulnerability, the willingness, the excitation, all the unknowns, something falls into place, we connect, a true pictorial dialogue unfolds.
