Artwork Statement

Judith Terkelsen OAM is a 2011 recipient of the Order of Australia Medal for her work with families and children in the Tweed Shire including children with disabilities. Judith’s sister Kelly is responsible for the drafting and wording of the letter which I used for this painting of Judith. Kelly is 42 years old, has a diagnosis of Down Syndrome and currently lives with her sister, Judith.

The letter relates to the sisters’ parents who both passed away recently and Kelly’s wish not to return to the family home which obviously evokes painful memories. I chose to use this letter for numerous reasons, while its content is highly emotional, the actual writing has a unique aesthetic and while grammatically it has problems, it is still surprisingly articulate.

I have a view of art and culture, which includes the sharing of knowledge. Intellectual disability is a fascinating field in relation to the way communication is often not the norm, but raw, devoid of executive functioning, highly personal and emotive. Judith deals with these differences on a daily basis as Director/Teacher of Tweed Valley Early Childhood Intervention Service Inc and Kelly is an intricate part of her life.
