Artwork Statement

"Woodfiring is something more than the heat treatment of ceramic works in a kiln. This becomes more evident at high temperatures (1300C+). Here, the effect on the pots of the melting fly ash and the volatile salts floating through the kiln becomes more visible. These discernible markings which may vary from the subtle to the very pronounced are almost impossible to emulate with any other firing technique. Some of the work has been firing in the kiln for over 600 hours. A new slip or glaze is applied to the pieces each time they are fired and the alchemical process is unleashed on them again. The work is process oriented. Most of my work has been fired several times to give the forms a depth of surface." The artist
