From the early 1960s John Witzig combined university with surfing journalism and photography. He wrote for Surfing World from 1963, becoming de facto editor of that magazine in 1966. He edited Surf International in the late 1960s, and in 1970 co-founded Tracks magazine. In 1977 he self-published the short-lived Sea Notes.

"Witzig, with his deft knack for being in the right place at the right time and wave rider’s judgment, had been the primary photographer of the Australian surfing culture and its distinctive individuals as it discovered itself and reinvented the aesthetic core of wave riding." (Steve Pezman – The Surfer’s Journal).
