J.O. (James) BURGESS

Whilst residing in the Northern Rivers region, James (J.O) Burgess, a former surveyor in the Royal Navy, was district surveyor for Grafton, Lismore and Glenn Innes. He was later Surveyor General at head office, Vaucluse, Sydney. Whilst in Lismore (1891-1897) he painted much of the district’s scenery when the Big Scrub existed in its virgin beauty.

Arthur J.W. Burgess was also an artist and his painting Britain's Heritage 1947 is part of Lismore Regional Gallery’s Collection.
