'he's [Ian McConnell] not around, he lived in Byron for many years and then he went travelling, he was a very reclusive man and does exquisite painting, but is very precious about his work and doesn't really show it very much. He had a little gallery in Byron once, he tried to do the whole business trip there, found it very difficult but his little gallery was excellent. It wasn't so long ago; it was in the guest house building before they rennovated, It was called Ridgidige. He's a very dedicated, like starving in the garret type of person, just totally dedicated to his art and then becoming involved with Aborigines, I think he probably went walkabout, up in North of Queensland somewhere. He could be anywhere'. Jan Rae (first director LRAG) 1994
