Albert Namatjira was the first indigenous artist to paint and exhibit professionally using a Western style of painting. Namatjira was taught to paint using the technique of watercolur painting by Rex Battersbee and belonged to what became known as the Hermannsburg School of Painters. Namatjira was an Arrernte man and painted his country around Hermannsburg, about 120 kilometres from Alice Springs.
